about the wimauma opportunity center expansion
On October 2019, Enterprising Latinas was awarded a facilities expansion grant by the Hillsborough County Office of Affordable Housing Services through its Community Development Block Grant (CDBG) program in the amount of $386,080, for the expansion of the Wimauma Opportunity Center (WOC). The CDBG grant helped pay for much needed renovations to the WOC including upgrading our bathrooms, installing a new roof, the activation of our commercial kitchen, upgrades to our utilities (electrical and water), and ADA accessible parking.
A second grant in the amount of $250,000 by the Allegany Franciscan Ministries Foundation (AFM), provided the financial support to pay for construction related costs and to add three modular buildings onto our property. Two of the modular buildings installed that were paid with funds from the CDBG and the AFM grants, were purposed to expand the WOC training and community service areas. The third modular building was purchased by Hillsborough Community College (HCC) to expand its Southshore Campus and educational programs, which are currently located in Ruskin, to Wimauma for classroom instruction. HCC provided the construction consulting services through its Facilities Planning & Construction department as their financial contribution and commitment to this project. The department's in-kind services were valued at over $100,000.
We are grateful to the contributions made by the various departments from Hillsborough County, including Affordable Housing Services, Development Services, Zoning, Construction, Utilities, and their teams for providing project management support. We are indebted to our partners at HCC for their steadfast commitment to education in Wimauma and their unwavering support to Enterprising Latinas' mission. We thank the many contractors and sub-contractors that worked with us through the COVID-19 pandemic to ensure our project met the guidelines and approval for a successful project implementation, including the leadership teams from Foresight Construction, DuCon Construction, Creative Modular Buildings, Pro-Fit Development, A-Plus Airconditioning & Refrigeration, J&R Electric, among others.
A special THANK YOU to the teams at Wilder Architecture and Native Engineering for their outstanding commitment and advocacy throughout the project.
